Vacation in Beautiful Isla Mujeres MX for less than $50 a day

My wife and I recently spent our 15th anniversary on Isla Mujeras. We had a wonderful time and spent less than $50, each, per day including our rental car, hotel, meals and relaxing. I will show you how to have a similar relaxing, beach front vacation on Isla Mujeras for less than $50 a day, or even less, right now.

Step 1 - Getting to Isla Mujeres

Taking the Foot Ferry to Isla Mujeres

Once you fly into to Cancun, there are a couple of ways to get to Isla Mujeres. You can take a bus or taxi from the airport to the pier in Cancun and then take the Foot Ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres. The foot ferry is about $70 pesos, or $5 USD each way, per person. Here is a link with Ferry info.

We rented a car at the Cancun airport from Alamo. If you reserve online you can get a compact or subcompact rental car for about $30 USD per day. That includes the mandatory Mexican Liability Insurance. $15 for the rental car and $15 for the insurance. Our credit card covers all of the other optional insurances, so we save quite a bit there. Ask your credit card company if they cover rental car insurance. That can save you $20 a day on car rental "oops" insurance.

Taking the Car Ferry to Isla Mujeres

We drove 30 minutes north to the pier to Isla Mujeres, bought a ticket and away we went. We accidentally followed the first sign to Isla Mujeres and this took us down a long and bumpy tourist road that eventually led us to the ferry. We should have stayed on the main road until we saw a sign for the ferry. The ferry was $330 pesos, $24 USD, each way for 2 people and the car. That price is always rising but should be about the same. And away we went on the ferry. We enjoyed a glass of wine on the deck and enjoyed the breathtaking waters approaching Isla Mujeres.

Step 2 - Choosing a Hotel on Isla Mujeres

We chose the Hotel Camanas Maria Del Mar online before arriving. With tax, our hotel room was $69 per night and the location was perfect. The north side of Isla Mujeres is great for sun bathing and relaxing on the beach. The hotel is located right on the north side of the island with the most beautiful beaches in the world. We didn't upgrade for a more expensive hotel but were very happy with our choice. It was clean, cozy, quiet and just right for what we were prepared to pay for a quick getaway on Isla Mujeres spending under $50 each per day. The hotel includes a very basic breakfast for free at the little restaurant bar on the beach. Coffee and toast. But hey, it's free. You can also order other food if you are so inclined. But we feasted on Toast, exotic jams and sipped coffee by the beach before plopping down in a beach chair and absorbing the suns rays for the next three days.

Step 3 - Relaxing on the Beach in Isla Mujeres

We relaxed all day on the beach, soaking up the Isla Mujeres sun for under $50 a day. We opted to rent beach chairs and an umbrella from the hotel for $180 pesos or $15 per day. But you can just as easily bring a towel, or lawn chair, and get your shade from the palm trees along the shore. That is of course free and you can stay there all day.

There were excursion boats pulling up all day full of tourists from Cancun. They paid, who knows how much, to enjoy the beautiful north beach of Isla Mujeres, that we were enjoying for free.

Step 4 - Eating Out on Isla Mujeres

We did choose to eat out a couple of times while on Isla Mujeres, which was really nice. We could have saved money on dining our, but we decided to splurge a little and enjoy ourselves. We walked west on the beach and at a restaurant on the beach on the north, west tip of Isla Mujeres. Very nice sunset and the food was good and pretty inexpensive too at about $8 per plate.

We went to Fénix one night. It was really nice. We sat outside, on a large bed on the beach and were served our food on a bench. The food was really good. Asian style. We had a couple drinks, watched the sun go down and looked up at the stars. Really relaxing, almost fell asleep. Fénix is a short walk from the hotel.

We had breakfast at Jax bar and Grill. A short walk from the hotel. We had country fried steak and gravy. Wow, that was an awesome treat and a break from tacos. Reasonably priced too, about $8 for a large plate of food. And the view was priceless.

There is a nice grocery store called Chedraui on Isla Mujeres if you want to buy some food to prepare instead of eating out so much. You can take a taxi there for about $20 pesos or under $2 each way.

All in all, a really nice, relaxing vacation on Isla Mujeres for under $50 per day, each.
